Welcome to Building Something Old, a newsletter about how technology is changing traditionally antiquated industries.

Disrupting the old guard has been a staple of the tech industry since inception. In 2023 it feels like there are tech companies taking over every major category and no stone has been left unturned. What will be the next wave of technological changes? What markets will they come in? What are the next major opportunities?

In my view, there is a massive opportunity in markets that have been left behind during this last technological revolution of the past two decades. These are the unchanged, undisrupted, and largely forgotten about markets that have been neglected by the current tech landscape. This neglect has led to market dynamics dominated by a few large incumbents that have no pressure to change.

“ I was told that all industry was in the hands of a few great companies, that no innovator could break their grip. Today, there are thousands of small companies making money on new things in the shadows of the giants.” - Vannevar Bush, 1970.

Building Something Old identifies the remaining old guards and highlights the opportunities for innovators and investors to modernize these medieval enterprises. As we look forward to the internet revolution and the companies of tomorrow, Building Something Old focuses on the sectors stuck in an age not yet consistent with the companies of today.

These spontaneously published newsletters tackle entire industries, sub-sectors, and even individual businesses.
